Elwin "Win" Rees Falor
August 31, 1935 - May 17, 2021 (age 85)
Win will be greatly missed by Carol Crooks, his faithful friend, sweetheart & prayer partner for over 31 years, and is survived by his sister Dorcas Sills of Robinson, IL, his children James Gregory, the son of first wife, Ruth Wilson Falor; and Amy Elizabeth, Elissa Suzanne, Zachary Benjamin and Jonathan Andrew, children of second wife, Sherry Polcyn Falor; and his children-of-the-heart, Callie Ann, Amanda Mauree, Justin Peter, Benjamin Joseph and Russell Wallace III, along with the Polish blessing of Adam, Barbara, and Agnes, arriving here in 1994 with their parents. Last, but not least, are Elwin's cousins, his nieces: Susan Sills, Teresa Franklin & Lorna Noe, his nephew: Matt Franklin, and his grandchildren, Abby & Zach Falor. Win was born in Ashland County, Ohio, and was preceded in death by his parents, Revs. Harold & Irene Falor (Oakland UMC, Marion, OH) and his older sister, Patricia Franklin. He was class president and graduated in 1953 from Marion Harding High School, was a charismatic speaker & youth minister, earned college credits at Asbury College, Wilmore, KY, Heidelberg College, Tiffin, OH, and graduated with a B.A. in English, from OSU, in 1958. As a lifelong Columbus, OH, English teacher, he had a gift for inspiring his students & helping them make sense of difficult pieces of literature (Bexley HS, OSU, and J Arthur Wilson HS at TICO). He did editing, sold Bischoff Medical & Surgical Supplies to hospitals, worked as a Headhunter & was also the Head Bartender at the Worthington Hills Country Club. In many ways you could call him a self-taught Jack-of-all-Trades, doing indoor & outdoor painting, repairing & improving cars, bikes & motorcycles, tweaking stereo equipment, building flagstone walls, & even working 36 hours straight, to build an entire Zenith TV from scratch, with all its minuscule parts & pieces! He had humorous stories to tell of nighttime pranks at Asbury College, and the challenge of outwitting his very smart Puli dog, named Anyo. If you ever got off the beaten path with Win, either in the woods or walking across what was the OSU Pig Farm, back in the day, you'd question your sanity, but eventually find the way out! He was an explorer at heart, always wanting to plumb the depths to discover & share the good, the true & the beautiful, whether the subject was literature, movies, religion, or cars (he had a Peugeot) & bicycles (he had a Botechia). Whatever it was, it had to be useful, meaningful, and of good quality. Later in life, in spite of the painful challenges of living day to day, with terminal cancer, Win's dedication to the Lord filled him with such peace, gentleness, gratitude & inner strength, that he seemed to have the heart & soul of a monk. We humans, in the whole course of our lives & our relationships, are such a mixture of being either blessings, or challenging lessons, to each other. At the end, Win was still my teacher, leaning on and trusting totally in our loving Lord, letting go & showing me how to die with love, dignity, and grace...knowing & believing the promise, as we declare in the Apostles Creed, .. we believe in the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. AMEN! Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 25th from 9-10AM at the John Quint Treboni Funeral Home, 1177 W 5th Ave, Columbus, OH 43212. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30am at St. Christopher Parish, 1420 Grandview Ave, Columbus, 43212. Green burial will be at 2pm in the Calvary Cemetery "St. Kateri Preserve", 1625 Calvary Dr, Dayton, OH 45409.If desired, donations can be made in his memory, to the Holy Family Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry, 57 S Grubb St, Columbus, OH 43215, or to The Catholic Foundation, 257 E Broad
