Domenico Canini, 100, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2020. He was born September 21, 1920, in a small town named Alvito, Italy, in the mountain province of Frosinone, Italy. His mother Nicolina died when he was only 8 days old and his father Angelomario died when he was 8 years old. He was raised by a special uncle, Zio Angelo Antonio and his wife Maria. Domenico grew up helping his uncle with chores on their large farm, until he met the love of his life, Domenica Canini. They were married on January 27, 1940. He was originally scheduled to be deployed on January 26th to serve his country in World War II. However, he was granted one more day to get married and had to leave the next day. He was stationed in Sardinia and then Corsica, Italy for several years but was allowed a few brief visits home. In the next few years they welcomed their three lovely daughters into the world: Nicolina, Maria and Liliana. In 1956 he ventured alone on a ship to America in search for a better life for his family. Three years later he was joined by his wife Domenica and daughters. These brave females boarded a ship in Naples for the 9-day journey to New York. They settled in Columbus where Domenico was hired by the Ohio State University at the Ohio Stadium. He worked during the legacy of Woody Hayes and had many stories to tell, including having to patch several holes in the walls! He worked at OSU for 30 years until age 65 when he retired. The Buckeyes always held a special place in his heart. Domenico was a devout Catholic and would not allow anyone in the family to miss Mass. He was very proud of his faith, family and America. No one was ever allowed to say anything bad about America! He always looked much younger than his age, with his clear, olive skin and salt and peppered hair. He was known to be very meticulous and took great care in maintaining his house, lawn, car and especially his garden. His quest to reach 100 years finally came to fruition on 9/21/2020. When asked what the secret to living such a long life was, he responded, "I eat lots of pasta!" Indeed, he had pasta at least once a day, every day. Earlier this year he was asked how he was feeling, and he replied, "Yesterday, I didn't feel too good. Today, I feel like 90! Domenico is preceded in death by his parents, Nicolina and Angelomario, and loving wife of 70 years, Domenica Canini. He is survived by daughters, Nicolina (Tony) Capoccia, Maria (Giuseppe) Canini and Liliana (Armando) Tempesta. He has 8 grandchildren, Fran Capoccia, Marisa (Giorgio) Bittoni, Danny Capoccia, Angela (Tom) Cua, Franco Canini, Antonella (Angelo) Iacobone, Roberto (Alla) Tempesta and Anthony (Linda) Tempesta. Domenico is also survived by 16 great grandchildren! No Public Visitation. Funeral Mass 10 a.m., Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church 5750 N. High St. in Worthington.
