Hugh was director of the International Paleo-Chronology Group and an active member of the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation. The Kolbe Center seeks to educate the public, particularly within the Catholic Church, in the truth of creation as revealed in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and as confirmed by the findings of modern science. Hugh's Catholic Faith was very important to him and informed his life on every level. He regularly attended Mass at St. Anthony of Padua. Hugh dearly loved his wife of 60 years, Peggy, and their 7 children. He especially enjoyed taking the family on vacations and then putting together photo albums to record the adventures. He enjoyed attending sports and other activities in which his children and then grandchildren were involved. He was passionate about dating fossils and doing research to disprove the Theory of Evolution.
