Obituary

Walter Raymond Burkley Walter Raymond Burkley, 97, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2022. "Buck", husband for 72 years to Martha, was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Columbus, OH, to Walter and Margaret Burkley. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Yvonne, Peggy and Jean, daughter-in-law, Lynne. Survivors include his devoted wife; 5 daughters, Janet Burkley, Mary Burkley, Ann (Brad) Nelson, Kate (Jay) Walker and Meg (Troy) Wernet; 6 sons - John (Nancy), Tom, Chris (Renee), Mike, Steve (Mandy) and Matt (Jenny); 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Buck graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Columbus before enrolling in the United States Army in 1942. He was stationed in the Philippines during the final months of World War II. He then briefly attended Ohio State University before joining his father's business. Buck met Martha in the summer of 1949 at Virginia Beach, near her hometown of Newport News, Virginia, and they married on Sept. 15, 1950. Buck and Martha raised 11 children, mostly in Grandview Heights, while Buck ran the family business, Burkley & Son Insurance Agency. He was a member of St. Christopher parish and was a board member of Rosemont School for Girls and the Child Guidance Center. Buck was named the Catholic Man of the Year by the Catholic Diocese of Columbus in 1969. Visitation Monday January 2, 2023, 4-7 pm at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday 10:00 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church. Inurnment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Ohio Living Hospice Foundation. A special thank you to the Columbus VA for their continued care and support.
