Obituary

Vito Joseph Checchio age 93 of Hilliard, Ohio passed away peacefully on Friday February 20, 2026. Vito was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Martha (Colaprete); parents, Michael and Josephine (Esposito) Checchio; sister, Francis (Checchio) DiTommaso; and grandson, Antonio Vatelle. Vito was born and grew up in Grandview, Ohio. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Vito met Martha in Grandview and married. They later moved to Hilliard to raise their four children, Cindy Evans (Tim McIntyre), Joanne (Tony) Kostantinidis, Mike Checchio and Sherrie (Dave) Vatelle. He was loved immensely by his 10 grandchildren, Scott (Callie), Andrew (Jessica), Alexis, Dominick, Mikey, Sophia, Christopher, and Gina. He was blessed with 6 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Antonio, Mila, Camden, Aiden, and Mara. Vito was an original founder of St. Brendan's Catholic Church where he served as a lecturer, usher, coach, along with running many parish festivals. Meeting and assisting many longtime friends in the community was something he enjoyed. Many people knew him well from coaching baseball and football in Hilliard, along with always being at the fields cheering on his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vito graduated from Capital and Bliss College with a degree in Accounting, where he later received his CPA from Franklin University. Vito was retired from Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Central Ohio. He then went on to consult for Ohio Health for many years. Through the years Vito belonged to and held many positions, sitting on the Board of Directors for HFMA, Medicare Reimbursement Committee, Ohio Certified Public Accountants and Board and President positions for The American Italian Golf Association and Guild Athletic Club. Vito's true passion aside from his family was golf! He played in many golf leagues, and in many tournaments in which he won and enjoyed sharing the win with his good friends. He was proud to pass on this love to his son Mike and his grandchildren. We would like to thank the wonderful staff and friends he made at Norwich Springs Health Campus, and Capital City Hospice for the wonderful comfort care they gave our father. May our father rest in peace for all of his hard and dedicated work he did for his family, friends, and employers.

As next door neighbor and friend to Vito's son, Mike, I was blessed to get to know Vito and Martha quite well. Their love for their children and grandchildren was beautiful to observe for over 20 years. Vito had a great sense of humor; he made me laugh.🥰 He is now reunited with his beloved Martha. I wish peace and comfort for all who love him.🙏

We are so blessed to have known your Dad, Vito, even for just a few years. Vito was such a wonderful friend to our father, Gerry at a time where Dad needed a friend. We will cherish the memories they made together. Vito was very special to all of our family. We will always remember his smile and sense of humor. Our Dad loved him like a brother, as he would often say. We are thinking of your family and sending prayers for your comfort and peace. May Vito rest in peace. God's blessings to you. Love, Patty (Hopper) Lykken and family.

I first met Vito in 1980 when I joined the Ohio Hospital Association. Vito and I enjoyed a strong professional relationship and shared our love of golf. In 1985, Vito sponsored me for membership in Riveria CC. During my introduction to the membership he changed my name to “Callerino”. We played golf every Saturday for the next five years. Good times I will always remember. “Go rest high on that mountain my friend, your work on earth is done”. Peace to all of Vito’s family and friends.

My sincere apologies and condolences on the passing of your Father Vito. I spent many years on the Board of Directors of the AIGA with Vito. In my earlier years he was a mentor, while getting accustomed to the operation of our club. As my family grew, Vito was always there at St. Brendan, welcoming my family as we came to Sunday mass. My adult children still talk about his wide smile when he saw them walking into church. It was a honor to know him and a pleasure to be around him! He was a good man and I know how truly missed he will be! My Father and him went to first grade together, a friendship that spanned 87 years! I am sorry I cannot convey these messages in person as I am flying back to Florida after helping my dad over the weekend. May the Lord be with him and ALL OF YOU, during this time.

I will miss Vito, he was not only a good friend over many years but he was well recognized as an expert in healthcare finance and Medicare rules and regulations. He was always committed

I knew Vito from our early years at Broadview Elementary School. He was a year ahead of me but I remember clearly! My sister lived on Glenn Avenue and I think Vito did to. Nice guy and good to hear of his family! Sympathy and prayers!
