Obituary

Shirley (Curly) Ann (Verna) Horner, 85, died unexpectedly on December 3, 2023, in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Born in Windber, Pennsylvania on August 21, 1938. She is preceded in death by mother, Anne Marie (Arrera) (Verna) Cornacchia; father, Samuel A. Verna; stepfather, Joseph F. Cornacchia; grandparents; former husband, Robert E. Horner; brother-in-law, Vincent (Vincee) Igel, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Shirley is survived by sisters, Stephanie Anne (Brandan) Sell, North Ridgeville, Ohio, JoAnne (Patrick) Facciani, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, Judie (Joe) Glandon, Pickerington, Ohio, LuAnne (Richard) Dierling, Richland, Pennsylvania; brother, Thomas J. Cornacchia, Richmond, Virginia; nephews, Jason (Rachel) Igel, Columbus, Ohio, Michael and Kevin Facciani, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Matthew Facciani, Ann Arbor, Michigan; niece, Stephanie (Jason) Trawick; special great-nephew, Vincent (Vinny); great-step nephews, Connor and Christopher Trawick, Pataskala, Ohio and by many loving cousins, friends and life-long friends. Shirley was a proud 1956 graduate of Windber Area High School and faithfully returned for her high school class reunions. Shirley had been a resident of Columbus since 1956 and though she loved "her" Columbus, her heart remained in Windber. Shirley had an extensive secretarial/administrative career working in medical or business offices since 1956 and retired from Nationwide Insurance. Shirley was naturally curious and was an avid reader and devoured The Columbus Dispatch newspaper and anything Gone with the Wind related and loved showing off her city to family and friends. She was a volunteer member of the Grandview Public Library Friends of the Library and served as its treasurer for 30 years. Shirley loved her "library people" and the many friendships she developed over the years. Shirley ushered at the Ohio Theater for over 30 years and especially loved live performances of Phantom of the Opera. She volunteered at the local food bank and golf tournaments. Shirley enjoyed traveling and experienced many genres of music and concerts and loved all food, especially chocolate and her mom's homemade Italian cuisine. A visitation will be held on Mon December 11, 2023 at the John Quint Treboni FH, 1177 W 5th Ave Columbus, Ohio 43212 from 10am-12noon, immediately followed by a Memorial Service. A private (immediate family) interment will occur in Shirley's beloved Windber, next to her dear grandma and grandpa Arrera and Aunt Marsie. In lieu of flowers, Shirley asked for donations be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Hospital, The Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice. We miss you, dear friend. We have so many fond memories of working on the FOL book sales, sorting and boxing the books between sales, having breakfasts at Paul's Restaurant, and looking for that First Edition of Gone with the Wind you wanted for your collection. Rest in Peace

My heart is broken hearing of Shirley's passing. She was such an amazing person and a wonderful friend to my mother, Claire Fidler. I'm extra saddened because we were always supposed to "get together sometime," but time gets away from us and we never did after my mother's passing. There are very few memories of Christmases growing up that didn't include Shirley at my house helping us to decorate. She was one of the kindest souls I've ever known. I am very sorry I couldn't make it to the calling hours or service, but I couldn't break free from work. I have a few old pictures of Shirley and my mother from when I was a kid that I'd love to share with someone, if you'd like to contact me. My email is cometmom0610@aol.com. Again, my deepest condolences. I loved Shirley dearly.

She was my neighbor, friend, CAPA, even COTA passenger pal, and so much more. She enjoyed life and shared her enthusiasm with others. I am sorry for your loss. I will miss her.
