Obituary
Reverend Father Steven W. Baumbusch, PIME, age 53, on Thursday, October 28, 2010, in Tagaytay (Philippines). Preceded in death by his parents, William and Barbara (Allen) Baumbusch and his sister, Diane Harkless. Survived by his brothers, Craig (Nancy) and Jim (Ellen); brother-in-law, Dave (Susan) Harkless; nephews and nieces, Ryan and Kylie Baumbusch, Matt (Rayna) and Megan Baumbusch, David Harkless, Theresa (Brad) Wahl, Michael (Rebekaah) and Melanie Harkless; great nieces and nephew. He entered the former PIME Sts. Peter and Paul Seminary in Newark in 1970. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Detroit and a master of divinity degree from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He was ordained a priest at his home parish, Columbus St. Andrew Church, on June 25, 1983, by Bishop James Griffin, then spent six years as a teacher and dean at the seminary and six years as PIME U.S. regional superior in Detroit. During his time as superior, he initiated a mission among the Mixtec Indians that was PIME’s first mission in Mexico. From 1995 to 1998, he was formation director for PIME’s college seminarians in Detroit and regional treasurer for the order. He left the United States in 1998 for the Philippines, where he served in the village of Colombio on the island of Mindanao, as parish priest at Mary Queen of Apostles Church in the Manila suburb of Paranaque, and finally as seminary rector. The family of Father Steve will receive friends beginning with the Rite of Reception at 3:00 p.m., followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, November 14, 2010, at SAINT ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1899 McCoy Road at Reed in Upper Arlington. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., at SAINT ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH with The Very Reverend Kenneth Mazur, PIME, as the Presider and the Reverend Father Mark J. Hammond as Homilist. Entombment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery Corinthians Mausoleum, Lockbourne, Ohio. To honor Fr. Steve's missionary work, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the PIME Missionaries, 17330 Quincy Avenue, Detroit, Michigan (48221) in his memory (envelopes provided during visitation). A good and holy man of God. One who truely lived "in persona Christi". When my brother came over, last Thursday to tell me the tragic news, he visibly wept. We all wept. He has run the race! Now he receives his eternal prize. Thanks be to God! "eah"

We are members of St. Vincent de Paul in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Fr. Steve heard our confessions and offered Masses when he came to give his friend Fr. Mark Hammond, a vacation break. We were deeply saddened by the news of Father's death. He was truly a wonderful priest of Jesus Christ and a fine man.

I'm a lector at Mary Queen of Apostles where Fr. Steve served as a parish priest.
I've been inspired by his homily because his messages were simple, realistic, practical, meaningful and to the point.
From what I've witnessed outside of the mass, Fr. Steve was the hands-on type. He always seemed to know what's happening around him. He faced challenges and concerns in the parish with the intent of resolving them.
The teacher in him made him quick to correct where correction was needed. He likewise was generous in giving praises even on small things.
He loved children and the children of our parish loved him back.
For the likes of me who serve in the parish, he was a mentor and big brother.
It was an honor and a blessing to have witnessed Fr. Steve's charism in teaching and his genuine love for God's people.
He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the loss your family is feeling. I read in a Philippine newspaper the accounting of his shocking accident. He was doing the Lords work and accomplishing such a great mission for so many.

It is still a shock my family to know that Father Steve is no longer with us. Having known and worked with him at PIME, I know he was an inspiring person working on Our Lord's staff. OHIO STATE (OSU) lost a "fantastic fan". Father Steve was especially important to us when he officiated at my son's wedding in 1994. His homilies were always a pleasure to hear. Our condolences to the entire Baumbusch Family. May the Lord's comfort be upon you during these days.
