Obituary

Phil Hammond, 89, passed away Sunday, Oct 20th, 2024, in Columbus, Ohio. His life began on May 5, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri where he was born to Georgia and Richard Hammond, the youngest of three boys. He was a graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, after initially starting college pursuing a degree in animal science. He spent his entire career as an engineer at Goodyear Tire & Rubber in Akron, Ohio designing tires and collecting U.S. patents. Before he retired, in late 1997 he was inducted into the American Society of Patent Holders as a Distinguished Corporate Inventor. Upon retirement he moved with his wife, Elena, who preceded him in death, to Lockwood Folly in Brunswick County, NC where he played golf for years and attended to his wife and many dogs that he had over the years. He loved Holden Beach and the Holden Beach Chapel, living out his faith as a volunteer and strong man of God and trusted in Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He is survived by daughter Cynthia (and Micheal) Cotten, son Phil (and Dana) Hammond, Jr, daughter, Sarah Hammond, daughter Melissa (and David) Cribbs, daughter Jessica Ganjon, grandsons and granddaughters, Brandon, Benjamin, Hannah, Noah, Riley, Grace, Claire, Glenn, Evie, Jack, Ryan and Charlie and countless other extended family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Phil’s memory to Holden Beach Chapel, Furever Friends Animal Rescue of Brunswick County, NC, or the National Alzheimer’s Association. Phil’s funeral service will be held at Holden Beach Chapel, Holden Beach, NC, 2pm, Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, with a celebration of his life to follow.
