I'm so sorry, Mike and Diane. This hurts so much. I'd never imagine this could happen--never in a million years. I'm thinking about you guys (and crying right along with you). I hope you find strength to overcome the pain. Patrick was incredibly special. He played such a huge part in my life and who I am and who I'll become. I think about him often, usually without even realizing that I'm thinking about him. I have a lot of amazing PTweed memories, and I'll never forget him. Love to you both. And love to your whole family.

I didn't know Patrick well, (he was a few years behind me in the program at Brown), but I knew him well enough to be deeply saddened by the news of his passing. I'll remember him as a remarkably kind, humble and thoughtful guy. He actually listened when you talked to him (something not at all common in our profession) and always took you seriously. (I imagine this made him a great teacher, and I know he was very well liked by his students.) But he also had a subtle sense of humor; he was the kind of person you could blow off steam with over a beer at the GCB.

I'll miss him.

I'm very sorry for your loss,

Steve

Please accept my deepest sympathy.

From the moment I met Patrick at the Providence airport, I knew him as a delightful individual and someone who would make a great roommate for Hannah. I cannot remember my daughter every being so pleased with a roommate as she was with Patrick; he brought much pleasure, humor and kindness into her life and was always the friend I would wish for her. He will be deeply missed by Hannah and me.

My best wishes and hopes for all of you.

My heart goes out to you. Patrick was my students in a number of classes at PSU and the classes were always better for his being there. I have used some of his technical documents for examples in my courses because his work was far better than examples provided in textbooks.

Patrick and I exchanged a few emails after he went on to Brown. I always enjoyed hearing from him.

Here is an excerpt from a letter of support that I wrote for Patrick when he applied for an internship at -The Nation's- Washington, D.C., office:

"Between 1999 and 2001, Patrick was my student in four classes at Portland State University: Introduction to Fiction 104, Grammar and the Sentence 299, Practical Grammar 425, and Introduction to Technical Writing 227. His work in all four classes was top notch. He is hard-working, bright, ethical, and creative. He has won the top writing award in PSU’s Department of English. I’m always pleased to see Patrick’s name on my class roster: he contributes intelligently to discussion and can disagree without being disagreeable. For example, in technical writing and grammar, he explained his editing choices in such a way that he could improve the work he edited without damaging the writer.

"Patrick Tweed works well with both students and faculty. He is modest without being self-effacing, he is open to suggestions, and he learns quickly. He is among the finest students I have taught in my 31 years of teaching. He has my highest recommendation."

I grieve his loss with you.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Patrick wrote his honors thesis with me at Portland State University. He was a pure joy to work with and I will miss him very much. He was an immensely talented writer and thinker and the entire PSU English department is very proud that he was once our student.
