Obituary

Michael Francis Dury, age 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on October 18, 2024. He was a proud father and grandfather, and a close brother, uncle and friend. Preceded in death by his loving wife Joan Carol (Daniel) Dury; son, Frank Dury; parents, Francis Joseph Dury and Agnes Gertrude (Strapp) Dury; father-in-law, Francis Luke Daniel; mother-in-law, Mary Frances (Darroch) Daniel; sister-in-law, Catherine (Daniel) Vonderahe; and nephew, Hank Vonderahe. Mike graduated from Bishop Watterson High School in 1967 and then graduated with a bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University College of Business. He worked for his father at Dury and Egger, then spent the rest of his career as a resource manager for Pactiv Corporation. He married Joan in August of 1973 and enjoyed 45 years together raising four children, while an active parishioner of St. Agatha Church. He was a faithful husband and a fun devoted father who enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, and hockey with his family. He placed importance on providing his children with a catholic education, encouraged their sports and academic pursuits, and supported each of them in earning a college degree. Mike was steadfast and caring during his son Frank's battle with leukemia, endeavoring to run his first marathon to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This began a chapter of becoming an avid runner, completing many marathons, and even carrying the Olympic torch on its way to Atlanta in 1996. Mike was playful and had a great sense of humor. He was genuine, wise, and practical, known for his prudent advice about life and finances. He enjoyed fine dining, travel, collecting wine, and most of all hockey. He taught his children to skate on his homemade backyard ice rink, and he played on several adult league hockey teams. He became one of the first season ticket holders of the Columbus Blue Jackets' inaugural season and remained a loyal fan throughout his life. He was courageous and resilient after becoming paralyzed while playing in a hockey game in 2006. He remained active in his favorite hobbies, mentored quadriplegics in an Ohio State SCI support group, and even travelled to Europe twice in his wheelchair. He was very proud of his children, lit up around his six grandchildren, and thought of his loyal caregivers as family. He will be greatly missed by his family and is survived by three children, Ann (Paul) Fiorilli, Meg (Joel Fenstemaker) Dury, Tom (Dee) Dury; grandchildren, Sophia, Esme, Grace, and Luke Fiorilli, Will Fenstemaker, and Charlotte Dury; siblings, Ron (Mary Lou) Dury, Mary Ann (Mike) Mulherin, Jim Dury, Susie (Kevin) Ganger, and Mimi Dury; in-laws, Marie (Steve) Blubaugh, Margie Ferrin, Christine (Jack) Kane, Annette Daniel, and Joe (Chris) Daniel; and many nieces and nephews and other beloved family members. His family will receive friends on Mon. Oct 28, 2024, from 4-7 pm at the John Quint Treboni FH, 1177 W 5th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43212. A Funeral Mass at 10 am Tue. Oct 29, 2024 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, 1860 Northam Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High St. Lockbourne. Ohio 43137. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name are preferred to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation (www.christopherreeve.org). Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com.

Mike was one of the first whom my husband and I talked to while at Dodd. Not knowing how life would be after my husband’s vehicle accident and becoming a quadriplegic, Mike gave a perspective that it would be okay. Different but okay. Prayers for all of you during this time and may the memories make you smile.

Mike was a great guy, a nice boy to grow up around in the old days, Class of 1967. Even though we were not in touch I kept up with his activities through family connections. Heavens gain.

Hi Uncle Mike, The other day I was going through old family photos and I found pictures of that ever so fun family party and the trip to Lake Erie with our families. Those were some of my favorite times with our crew. I remember your hilarious impersonation of Willie Nelson and the improvised SNL recording that we did. It was the best way to spend time on a rainy trip to Put-in-Bay. The family party at Aunt Chris's house was the best time we had as a whole family in my near memory. I have missed that time with everyone. Although we have spread our wings as a larger group, I will always remember you for a good laugh and fun times. Most of all, my dad will miss talking with you via cell. That was a long and meaningful relationship for the both of you- from college days to weddings and births of both family's kids. I will miss you, I hope you, Frank and Joan along with all of our previously dear relatives are enjoying your time together in heaven, please say hello to everyone and hugs them often- May God grant you peace and serenity forever. ❤️ Love you, Ann, Meg, Tom, Dee, Paul and all of my 2nd cousins. ❤️
