Obituary

Mary Anita DiPietro, a beloved educator, mentor, and devoted family member, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on November 8, 1931, in Columbus, Ohio, Mary dedicated her life to education, faith, and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Salvatore and Irene (Di Rienzo) DiPietro; brothers, John, Robert, and Tony; sisters, Jean, Teresa, Loretta, and Philomena; and nieces, Grace and Toni Irene. Mary is survived by her nieces, Janet (Jim) Rayl, Juanita (Ben) Cardosi, Mary Jo (Terry) Dawson and Marie (Dennis) Saylor; nephews, John S. (Teresa) DiPietro, Robert J. (Candy) DiPietro, and John J. (Judy) DiPietro. She also leaves behind numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, all of whom she cherished dearly. Mary was a proud graduate of Central High School before earning a degree in Education from St. Mary's of the Springs, now Ohio Dominican University. Her passion for learning led her to obtain a Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Cincinnati. She began her teaching career at St. Mary's in Maryland, where she taught third grade before returning home to Columbus. It was at St. Francis DeSales High School where Mary found her true calling, dedicating 31 years of her life as an educator and librarian before retiring in 1993. Her impact at St. Francis DeSales was profound, and in 2003, the school honored her legacy by dedicating the library in her name. The Mary DiPietro Media Center stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment and passion for education. Inscribed on the dedication wall are the words: "For 31 years, Mary's untiring dedication and commitment impacted our lives. She not only served as a school librarian, but also a mentor, friend, and supporter. Because of her great dedication to St. Francis DeSales, we are honoring her by naming the school library the Mary DiPietro Media Center." Mary's legacy lives on through the countless students she inspired, the family she loved, and the faith that guided her life. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered. I moved to Columbus my senior year of high school from New York. I was fortunate to attend St Francis de Sales High School where Mary welcomed me and continually helped and encouraged me. Later, everytime
I returned to Ohio, I visited Mary. Her kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.

Mary DePietro served DeSales High School for 31 years. I remember her as being kind, patient and professional as she dealt with students who could be rambunctious at times. She was a prime example to everyone who knew her of a woman who loved God, her students and the DeSales traditions. May she rest in God's heavenly presence.

Oh the stories you would tell. The names you could reveal. PR, LS, BK, MG. And others who disrupted the "silence" of the library in '65-'66. And you, Mary, were the ONLY one who could handle us! And so many, many others who were fortunate enough to seek your attention in so many ways. A guiding light. A counselor. A friend. At DeSales and beyond for year after year. I will miss you along with hundreds of others who were touched by your life to make our lives better. Be thou at peace. Amen.

Mary would frequently stop by the office at Villas of St. Therese,(my former workplace) to greet us, on her daily stroll. She was so caring, and had an endearing personality.
My condolences to her family, especially John and Judy.

To the beloved family and friends of Mary DiPietro

On behalf of the students, faculty, administration, and alumni of Saint Francis DeSales High School I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. DiPietro for the loss of this gentle soul. To say that Mary touched the lives of all that were blessed to know her would be a profound understatement.

God places people in our lives who enhance who we are as people through their kindness and love. Such was the case with Mary DiPietro. It seems entirely appropriate to me that Mary would be named after our Blessed Mother. Her gentle spirit and warm smile made everyone she interacted with feel at home and valued.

As an alumnus of SFD I know that many of my classmates would visit the Library to seek her help on research they were doing but more importantly they benefitted from the loving advice of this wise and gentle soul. While Mary did not have children of her own she treated every child that she worked with as a child of her own.

May the angels lead Ms. Dipietro to paradise and may perpetual light shine upon her.

Peace and God's Blessings
