Obituary

Martha Hayward Burkley age 94, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025. Martha, wife of Walter R. "Buck" Burkley for 72 years, was born December 1, 1930, in Newport News, Virginia to Francis Taylor & Marguerite (Van Reit) Hayward. Along with her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her beloved Walter; sisters, Peggy, Betty Lew and Fan Tay; and daughter-in-law, Lynne. Martha is survived by 5 daughters, Janet Burkley, Mary Burkley, Ann (Brad) Nelson, Kate (Jay) Walker and Meg (Troy) Wernet; 6 sons, John (Nancy), Tom, Chris (Renee), Mike, Steve (Mandy) and Matt (Jenny); 24 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Martha graduated from Newport News High School and attended Virginia Intermont College. Martha and Buck met in the summer of 1949 at Virginia Beach and married on September 15, 1950, in Columbus, Ohio. The newlyweds attended the Michigan v. Ohio State football game two months later. The "Snow Bowl" not only introduced Martha to OSU football but also to weather she wasn't accustomed to growing up in Virginia. Her backing of OSU football over the next 74 years was surpassed only by her support of her many offspring's activities. Martha and Buck's 11 children were mostly raised in Grandview Heights where she was a long-time member of St. Christopher Parish. She was most recently a member of St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church. Martha had many passions that she passed along to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing tennis and watching her favorite tennis players on TV and Martha was also fond of playing bridge. One of her greatest joys was spending family time at the beach. Martha was an accomplished pianist and taught piano for decades. Her love of teaching inspired many family members to follow in her footsteps. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at the John Quint Treboni Funeral Home, 1177 W 5th Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43212 from 4-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday at St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church, 1600 N. Hague Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43204 at 11 am. A procession will follow to St. Joseph Cemetery 6440 S. High Street Lockbourne, Ohio 43137 for interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Kobacker House at ohiohealth.com or the link below. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.johnquint.com.

I met your wonderful mother as a Eucharistic Minister for St. Margaret of Cortona taking Communion to the homebound. The first time I stepped into her home I immediately recognized her from Church. She was such a dear person, so calm and so caring. She had the sweetest smile and was so easy to sit and visit with. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I last saw her and she looked great, so conversive and shared that she was having some heart issues for which she was going to be treated. I never dreamed I would not ever see her again. The world lost a wonderful woman, but heaven gained a perfect angel, I'm sure she must be playing the piano for God, our Lord and Savior and all of the heavenly hosts! It was my privilege and blessing to have known her. May her soul rest in the peace of the Lord for all eternity and my prayers are lifted for all of the family; she spoke of all of you every visit!

I just heard about your mother and am so sorry. My mother just passed away two months ago so I know how rough it is. I still remember the countless times I saw Momma and Papa Burkley walking hand in hand down First or Grandview Ave. Again, I am so sorry. What a great lady!
