Obituary
Laura Giammarco Cua, born September 6, 1955 in Columbus, OH, died June 11, 2014 at her home in Westerville, surrounded by family as they prayed the rosary. Laura grew up in Columbus, a graduate of St. Matthias grade school and St. Francis DeSales High School (’73). After DeSales Laura pursued a degree in Education at Bowling Green State University (’77), followed by a masters degree from The Ohio State University. She retired last May after 35 years of dedicated service in education to Columbus City Schools. Laura was a devoutly faithful woman, a loving wife and mother, loyal friend and a tenacious leader and mentor. She was happiest with her toes in the sand, a beer and burger in hand, and family and friends at her side. Laura is preceded in death by her father, Feliciano Giammarco. Survived by her high school sweetheart, Michael Cua; children, Angelo, Mario, Marcella, and Santino; her mother, Dilia Giammarco; siblings, Nina Pietrzyk (Roger) and Pasquale Giammarco; nephew, Bryan (Eve); nieces, Lauren, Denise and great-niece, Lexi. As per her request, her body has been donated for medical research to OSU Hospital. A memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Italian Catholic Church, 720 Hamlet Street (Italian Village) on Tuesday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m., with a reception to follow. Those who wish may donate to the “Laura Giammarco Cua Memorial Scholarship” at St. Francis DeSales High School 4212 Karl Rd., Columbus (432240, or in Laura’s memory to St. John the Baptist 720 Hamlet St., Columbus (43215). It was with sadness that I read about Laura's passing. We have heard about her illness and hoped she might overcome it but it the end God decided otherwise. She in the end showed her unselfish quality in hoping her death might help another.

She was my college roommate at BGSU. We lived on East Merry Street. She was always smiling. It makes me very sad because I know she made huge contributions as a teacher. I wish I could attend the service tomorrow. She will always live in my heart.
