Obituary

Joseph Anthony Sabo, age 81, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024. He was born on October 27, 1942 in Columbus, OH, ultimately settling in the neighborhood of Indian Springs. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Adele (Mininni) Sabo; and brother-in-law, Jules Allen. He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Sabo; children, Joe (Allie) Sabo and Gena (Bret) Baker; grandchildren, Ally, Jess, and Michael Baker; sister, Tammy Easter; brother, Mike Sabo; sister-in-law, Charlene Allen; ex-wife, Linda (Paul) Hammer, and many cherished cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. Joe graduated from Linden McKinley high school in 1960 and served in the US Navy through 1963. During his tour of service, Joe was part of the Cuban Missile Crisis – a naval blockade that prevented the Soviet Union from placing nuclear weapons in Cuba. After being honorably discharged as an EM3, Joe became a skilled electrician and proud member of Local Union 683 for whom he worked until retiring in 2004. Joe lived a rich life – he loved gardening, woodworking, and the summer sun. Anyone who sampled his spaghetti sauce knows he was an excellent cook, building upon recipes that have been handed down through generations. Of all his family members, he loved his dogs the most, and he will be missed by Maggie and Ivy. He loved OSU football, the Indians/Guardians, and the Browns despite their years of futility. His perfect evening was spent sitting outside with pizza from Dante’s, three fingers of scotch, and a radio playing Frank Sinatra. Most of all, Joe will be missed for his unwavering commitment to helping and celebrating others – a home repair for a family member, shoveling a neighbor’s driveway, visiting a sick friend, hosting Christmas Eve parties, or taking a kitchen shift at the Guild Athletic Club. The family would like to recognize the staff at Bickford of Worthington and Vitas Healthcare for the excellent care they provided Joe during his last year. In accordance with Joe’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. Instead, an open house / celebration of life will be held on October 27 at 4 pm at the Guild Athletic Club, 1114 Ridge St., Columbus, Ohio 43214. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to Pets Without Parents.

Joe was a rare spirit full of joy and i was shaken to learn of his passing! You see Joe had a young soul and zeal for life! Guess God wanted him more and that is ok God walks with one of the finest of his creation! Any body that knew Joe knew he revered his mom one story he shared with me after a break in service from marriage his mom called worried and he said just having dinner MA, he answered! She asked what are you having Joe read the marie calanders discription from the frozen dinner! Why that is wonderful, and his mom was not worried at least about that! Wonderful soul always enjoyed his company!
