Joan K. Matto. Joan never met a stranger. Everyone was an instant new friend in her eyes. She was classy, beautiful, elegant, friendly, accepting, and kind; a lover of life with an infectious smile. Joan was always energized around family and friends. Joan spent her entire career in the travel industry and loved to travel. She was as at home in Central Ohio as on the French Riviera; shopping in discount stores in Columbus or in the high end shops in West Palm Beach. She felt at ease at a private dinner in the Vienna Palace of the Prince of Liechtenstein or eating an airport hot dog waiting for the next leg of a travel adventure. She loved to talk about, and leaves behind, her children Deborah Bonarrigo Gray(Steve) and Tom Bonarrigo (Lauren Rayden) and her step-children E.J. Matto(Kathryn), Holly Matto(Chris Spera), Kevin Matto(fiancee Amy Bojarski) and Aaron Matto. Her delight and unending joy were her grandchildren Alex, Isabella, and Austin Gray and step-grandchildren Carter Spera and Jason Matto. She was immensely proud of her Italian heritage. This pride came from her parents Peter Rappich, who pre-deceased her, and her mother Ida who survives her. She shared this Italian pride and many beautiful memories with her sisters Annette Grote Macklin(Ken) of Lithopolis and Joyce Elia(Tony) of Southern California with whom she also enjoyed weekly phone chats. She also leaves behind a beloved aunt, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Joan and her husband and soul-mate Ed packed eons of meaningful and fun times into the brief years they had together. They even continued international travel between rounds of chemotherapy. The continuous love, support and friendship of her dear friend Nellie Riordan throughout the years and especially during her past months of struggle were a true blessing to Joan. Even in the last months when her struggle was difficult, she still held on to her zest for life and she enjoyed being with her friends in the Frugal Grape Wine Tasting Group, of which she was a founding member. She shared a common interest with certain friends in the "hunt": the hunt of a great bargain. Joan also loved to cook, entertain, and to explore new restaurants in search of the world's best creme brule. Joan was a graduate and proud alumna of Bishop Hartley High School and attended The Ohio State University. Joan, you left us much too soon, but you traveled joyously throughout life and your time with us was well served. We'll miss you terribly but now we know you are traveling in First Class with God. Joan was born on September 3, 1943 and passed April 9, 2007. A Catholic Prayer Service for family will be held 7:00 PM on THURSDAY, April 12th, 2007 at JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 W. 5th Avenue. A Service of Celebration of Joan's Life will be held 10:00 AM on FRIDAY, April 13, 2007 at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd. The family will greet friends after the service in Brownlee Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute in memory of Joan to the Gynecological Cancer Foundation, 401 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago IL 60611. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com.
