Gilbert “Gil” Raines, 80, a full-time resident of Naples, FL since 2001, passed away June 10, 2012. Born in Walland, TN, he was the son of the late Jesse S. and Elizabeth Simmons Raines. Gil was a graduate of the Ohio State University, Class of 1954, earning his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and Master of Science Degrees. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in 1966, majoring in chemical engineering. He worked as a process engineer for Union Carbide Chemicals in Charleston, WV from 1954 to 1956. He worked at Battelle Columbus Laboratories from 1956 to 1974 advancing through several positions from Research Engineer to Assistant Department Manager. Gil worked as a private consultant from 1974 to 1978 at which time he returned to Lawhon & Associates as Vice President of Engineering. He left Lawhon in 1992 and worked as Senior Project Managers for EES Corp. until his retirement in 1996. Gil was married to Margaret DeVictor of Columbus, OH from 1953 until she passed away in 2000. They lived in Charleston, WV from 1954 to 1956 and Columbus, OH from 1953 until 2000. They were long-time members of Hickory Hills Golf Club in Grove City, OH. They spent the winter months in Naples from 1994-2000 Gil married Nona Toops Wylie in 2001. They resided in Naples where he was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and Royal Palm Country Club. He was also a volunteer case worker at St. Vincent DePaul Society in Naples. Gil and Nona spent summers in Apple Valley, Howard, OH. He is survived by his wife, Nona; Gil’s children, Linda (Jonathan) Paoletti; John Raines and Robert Raines, all of Grandview Heights; Cynthia (Mark) Grover of Gahanna, OH; and Karen "Meg" Morrison, M.D. of Hilliard, OH; grandchildren, Amy Grover; Andrew Raines; Seth Grover; Jack Morrison; Ellie Morrison; and Jenny Morrison: and Nona’s children, Carolyn Jayne Moeller of Blue Ash, OH; Dianne Wylie (Philip) Smith of Proctorville, OH, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother J. Walter Raines of Wilmington, DE. Friends may call FRIDAY, June 15, 2012 at OUR MOTHER OF SORROWS CHAPEL (within the grounds of St. Joseph Cemetery) 6440 South High Street, from 10:30-11:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial immediately following. In lieu of flowers,donation in Gil's memory may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, 2874 Davis Blvd., Naples, Florida 34101-4337.
