Obituary

George Ludwig Walter, Jr., age 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 25, 2024. George was born February 12, 1929, at St. Ann's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, the son of George L. Walter, Sr. and Anna M Grigsby. On August 22, 1953, George married the love of his life, Nancy, and they were married for 68 years until Nancy's passing in 2021. George attended Our Lady of Victory Academy, Marble Cliff, Ohio, one of two boys in a class of 13 graduates. George served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. George's career was spent in the grocery business, beginning at Albers Supermarkets, 1947-1963, in Columbus, Ohio. Rising from bagger, carryout and stock clerk to assistant manager, George was promoted to manager of two of Albers' newest and biggest stores, located in Great Western and Northern Lights shopping centers, both in Columbus' fastest growing areas after World War II. Always desiring to be independent, George purchased his own store in 1963, Walter's IGA, on Westerville Road in Linden. His store was an important part of the Linden community for many years. He worked with the local high school OWE program to give students part-time work experience. George took pride in having his children work at the store which taught them many valuable life skills. His customers appreciated his care and dedicated service to them and the community. In 1987, his daughter and son-in-law took ownership and continued the operation until 2010. George enjoyed his family, cars, boating, traveling, especially to Germany, his favorite, and working in the wooded lot and planting trees surrounding his home. In 1974, George became a private pilot, and over 20 years, he owned five single-engine Cessna airplanes. He was a former member of the Central Ohio Retail Grocers Association, Columbus Maennerchor and Germania Singing and Sports Society. George was a strong family leader, a loving husband, parent and grandparent, "firm but fair", an unforgettable person. George is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy; parents and brother, Lawrence. He is survived by daughters, Rebecca (James) Oberla, Rachel Kuhar, and Constance (Frank) Lolli; son, Christopher (Renna) Walter; grandchildren, Eric Oberla, Benjamin Kuhar, Evan (Becca) Oberla, Andrea (John) Capella, Melanie Lolli (Adam Buch), David (Sarah) Kuhar, Abigail Oberla (Robert Cooper), Diana (Alfred) Yates, Anna Oberla, Alexander (Racheal) Walter and Emily Lolli; and great-grandchildren, Brayden, Sofia, Asher and Liliana. A visitation will be held on November 1, 2024, at the John Quint Treboni Funeral Home, 1177 W 5th Ave Columbus, Ohio 43212 from 11 am - 12 noon. A Celebration of Life service will begin at noon followed by a procession to St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High Street, Lockbourne, Ohio 43137 for a Graveside Service and Interment.

Dear Walter family,
from my heart I send you my deepest sympathy. I‘am from the Black Forest in Germany, you might remember me. George and Nancy visited my village in the early 90‘s. I met them and they invited me in their home. I visited them, I think I was 19 at that time, and I could spend some unforgettable days within their family. So I want say thank you again from the other side of the Atlantic. I will not forget you George and keep you in my memories forever. Sincerely Thomas Seger, Germany

I remember your dad from years ago, when Kyle got a job delivering the Tri- Village News. Your dad had called Kyle and told him it was a great job to have. That he delivered papers as a youth. Your dad even showed Kyle where to put the paper. In the basket tied to the pole by your driveway. And many days walking to school with the kids. When we had Maverick and he walked with us to school, your dad always asked if our dog (Maverick) was cold in the winter. No, he was known to bury himself in snow and lay on the icy driveway.
Sorry for your loss, your dad was a good man and father.
