Obituary

On Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, Elmer "Tom" Hensel, loving husband and father, passed away at age 91. Tom was born on May 22, 1930 to Hugh and Daisy Hensel of Columbus, Ohio. He was a Linden McKinley graduate. He worked for the Carpenters Union Local 200 from where he eventually retired. Tom was a proud Marine Corp and Air Force National Guard veteran. He has been married to his first love Sylvia for 71 years. They raised two children together, Monica and Michael.
Tom had a heart of gold and could light up any room that he walked into. He was an avid Ohio State buckeyes fan. He spent much of his time at the bowling alley where he sharpened his skills and became a very fine bowler. Tom also has a passion for fishing. He loved to collect change for his grandkids and would sneak them chocolate every opportunity he had. He was known for his quick wit, his kindness and compassion as well as his infectious smile. Whenever you were around him it was inevitable that he would make you laugh by cracking a joke. If you wanted to make him happy all you would have to show up with is a chocolate Wendys frosty. He was truly one of a kind.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, Hugh; his mother, Daisy; and his brother, James. He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Hensel; daughter Monica (David) Carr; son Michael Hensel; 3 grandchildren, Ann (Curtis) Hampton, Mike (Tina) Carr, and Miranda (Cody) Jones. He also had many great grandchildren who loved him dearly, Nadine, Kaleb, and Kollin Carr, Samaria, Nathan, and Mahlia Hampton, and Carter, Carson, and Madison Jones. He will be so terribly missed by his extended family Mary (Mark) Dehnart, Michelle Smith and family, Melinda Kesler and family, and Monique David and family. Special Friends Paula Owens and Martha Reeder. The family will receive friends at his visitation on Friday, March 11th, 2022 at the John Quint Treboni Funeral Home, 1177 W 5th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43212 from 3-5 pm. A Memorial Service will immediately follow. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com

Dear Silvia,

When I think of Tom the verse in 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 comes to mind. "Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ..." Tom always carried with him the triumph and the fragrance of the Lord no matter how bad things got. He truely gave you the love, gentleness and kindness of Christ our Lord in all his dealings with myself and Joyce. We were blessed to have fellowship with both of you. We will miss him and we will keep you in our prayers. May the God of all comfort keep you today and the days to come. Love Tom and Joyce Lopez
