Anthony J.(Tony), age 92, died Tuesday December 23, 2003 at Riverside Hospital after a brief illness. He was born June 13, 1911 in Columbus, Ohio. Tony spent 52 years in humanitarian service. Tony was a champion for the underprivileged and less advantaged people in the Columbus community. He was a Probation Officer with Juvenile Court fom 1939-1948, Executive Director of Godman Guild 1948-1967 and Social Service Coordinator of Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority 1967 until retirement 1976. Tony was a trustee of the following organizations: St. Stephens Family Trust, Columbus Day Care Center for the Elderly, Dutch Uncles, Near Northside Neighborhood Council, Creative Living and a Founding Father of Columbus Day USA. Tony was also a member of Columbus Junior Chamber of Commerce, Guild Athletic Club (one of the Founding Fathers), Piave Club (Lifetime member) Amici D'Oro, Flytown Club (Lifetime member) and Men's MATH club an auxiliary of Clintonville Women's Club. Tony was preceded in death by parents Vincenzo and Concetta Salvatore, wife, Catharine, brothers Charley, Frank, Dante, Joe Salvatore and sister Helen Bowes. Tony is survived by his daughter, Barbara Heicher Gale (Wally), with whom he made his home, grandson Todd Heicher, granddaughter Samantha Gale, nephews James D. Salvatore, Bob Bowes (Nancy) ,niece Frances Hawkins, many other great nieces and nephews. Prior to 1992, Tony resided at 4637 Olentangy Blvd, and spent the winters in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton Florida.
Family will receive friends on Friday December 26, 2003, at the JOHN QUINT & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. With the GAC's service at 7:30 p.m. Piave Club Service 7:45 p.m., prayer service 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday December 27, 2003 at St. John The Baptist Italian Catholic Church, 720 Hamlet Street, Rev. Fr. William A. Metzger Celebrant, Msgr. Anthony Borrelli, concelebrant. Entombment St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum, 6440 South High Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tony Salvatore Scholarship Fund at the Godman Guild to enable underprivileged children
