I have so many beloved childhood memories attending the summer meetings of the Circulo Cubano in Grandview with my parents Mario and Clara. Sr. Perez was a legend and very loved by all of us who were able to call him a friend. He always treated me as a beloved family member even though I am sure I interrupted and often distracted the mens many boisterous games of dominos. My heart grieves with you all. Sending much love from the Piquero family and prayers for peace and comfort - heaven certainly gained another angel.

I will never forget the first time I met Alberto Perez in the summer of 1986 when our family was relocated to Columbus Ohio from New York City. It was on my first visit to a Kroger grocery store and needing to use the public phone (no cell phones like we have now) to call my husband that I met Alberto. The phone I needed was located by the customer service area, outside the groceries area. When I reached the phone area there was a man using it, Alberto. He was speaking to someone In Spanish and given that I was within earshot, it was easy for me to hear the conversation of this tall man with a strong voice, wearing a Pepsi Cola uniform.


When he finished his conversation he apologized for making me wait but given that I heard him speak in Spanish, I immediately asked him for his nationality. When he said he was Cuban and that he was a member of the great Circulo Cubano of Columbus which my husband and family were invited to join a few days earlier, I laughed with joy as we were planning to join the group.


Through the ensuing years, we had great summer days enjoying each other’s company. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Alberto Pérez and Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Alonso for welcoming my husband, Mario Piquero, me, and our children into your nurturing bosom.


Since that eventful per chance meeting with Alberto, he, Rosa, Orlando, and Zuny became our extended family; domino games for the guys, eating together, conversing with each other, playing lottery games for the ladies, etc., it was all great always being able to spend summer with our children and our new friends. We are, very sorry indeed to say a final goodbye to Alberto, our dear friend.

Mr. Al Perez was the boss at my very first job working in a Pepsi booth at the Ohio State Fair. He was a very kind and patient man. My most sincere condolences to Mikey and the entire Perez family.
