Obituary

Shirley Irene (Gibbons) Flanigan, age 87, peacefully entered into Eternal Life on June 22, 2022 at her residence surrounded by her children. Proceeded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Michael Flanigan; her parents, Lloyd and Iva Gibbons; four sisters and two brothers. Shirley is survived by two sisters; Beverly Walker and Phyllis Rowan; five children, Mike Flanigan (Sharon), Tom Flanigan (Jane), Pat Whyte (Lorna), Teri Minney (Mike), and Shaun Flanigan (Kacey). She is also survived by ten grandchildren; Amanda Smith (Josh), Matt McGinnis (Jennifer), Nina Flanigan, Coleman Flanigan (Brittney), Ryan Whyte (Becca), Casey Flanigan, Michael Flanigan (Amanda), Colin Whyte (McKenzie), Katie Flanigan, Shaun Flanigan; and seven great-grandchildren; Canaan, Cael, and Cambree Smith, Kenadie, Madison, and Olivia Flanigan, and Liam Whyte. Shirley was born and raised in Athens County, Ohio and was a 1952 graduate of Nelsonville High School where she was elected prom queen in 1952. She moved to Grandview Heights, Ohio in 1969 where she resided for the rest of her life. Shirley took pride in her previous employment at Ohio University, Ohio State University, and Merck-Medco. However, her most valued contribution was to her family and extended family for which she cared for and nurtured with dedication and grace. She enjoyed playing music as a member of her high school band, the smallest trombone player and began singing with her siblings as a child and continued to sing into her later moments of life. Shirley was an avid painter and took great pride in creating a welcoming environment. Shirley always made a place at the table and many called her house a second home. Shirley enjoyed meeting friends for lunch and had been a frequent visitor at Macy's. In her later years of life, Shirley loved watching old movies and enjoying her favorite sweets. Shirley was generous, kind and most of all loving. She leaves behind a legacy as a daughter, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that is too great to measure. Shirley was a member of Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Grandview. The family would like to thank The Kobacker House and the dedicated staff of Ohio Health Hospice.
