Obituary

T. Sgt John "Ron" Spring, passed away with his family at his side on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Son of Elwood and Vera Spring, Ron was born on October 14, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. He was 82. Ron moved to Columbus, Ohio with his father’s magic act at a young age. Working alongside his mother and father at the Southern Theater, he performed on stage, bringing magical acts to Columbus. After attending Columbus City Schools and graduating from North High School, Ron joined the Navy at 17. After the Navy, he joined the Air Force and was stationed all over the world. After 20 years, he retired from the Air Force and graduated from Indiana University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, while instructing ROTC. This began his Safety Career working as both an OSHA instructor in Indiana, and later a Safety Officer at Diamond Power in Lancaster, Ohio. Once in Lancaster, Ron enjoyed working at Lancaster High School and a local Golf Pro Shop. Later, he returned to Columbus, where he worked at a Thorn Apple Country Club and played in weekly Friday golf outings. He also loved traveling, especially to South Carolina and Tennessee. Ron loved Buckeye Football and Reds Baseball and many evenings were spent with family listening to his teams on the radio. An avid golfer and dancer, Ron enjoyed playing a few rounds and dancing a polka when not gardening and sitting with his beloved dogs, Teddy and Gunner. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha "Ann" Spring; his children, James Spring (Holly Spring), Phil Niekamp (Vanessa Niekamp), Kelly Traylor (Jim Traylor), Craig Niekamp (Sheri Niekamp), David Spring (Sara Spring), Elizabeth McNally (Brian McNally), Matt Sammons (Melissa Sammons); his 12 grandchildren, and his 4 great-grandchildren. He will be missed by dear friends, Kelly Bartholomew and Amy and Chris Leska. He was predeceased by his lifelong friend, Jack Bartholomew. His family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, concluding with a memorial service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family is requesting memorial contributions be made to the Columbus Vet Center or Mount Carmel Hospice. Services entrusted with Robert C. Carter of JOHN QUINT TREBONI. Condolences may be sent via www.johnquint.com.
