Obituary

Donald E. Geiser, 79, of Columbus, OH died on May 1, 2017. Don was born on January 5, 1938 in Akron, OH, the second of four boys to the late Laura (Mayer) and Philip A. Geiser. Don, unlike (as he would describe it) his weak, skinny brothers, was born big and strong and stayed that way throughout his life, leading to his being nicknamed "Heavy Duty" by his friends as an adult. Growing up close to a golf course, Don developed a lifelong love of golf and caddied for several years in the 1950s, including for a top player on the professional circuit, Herman Keiser, who won the Masters Tournament in 1946. This was something that Don frequently brought up when golf was being discussed. Don became an excellent golfer in his own right, winning many amateur tournaments up until he was in his late 60's. Mr. Keiser had urged Don to try the pro circuit (also occasionally mentioned when Don talked golf!) but a surprising lack of confidence held him back. Don was well known for his sense of humor, something noted by everyone who met him. During his drinking days (he quit drinking cold turkey in the 1970's) he was once told by a police officer who had picked him up from a bar for a free trip to the city's complimentary sleep facility (aka drunk tank) that Don was the funniest drunk he had ever met! Don joined the Marine Reserves directly after graduating from Norton HS in Norton, OH. He proudly served from 1956-1960. Don then worked retail for a decade before working at youth rehabilitation facilities through the 1970's and 80's. After that he worked for a few years as a long haul steel trucker and then at Avis Rental Car at Columbus Airport, a job he really enjoyed. Sadly, Don was stricken by Alzheimer's disease in his mid 70's, but never lost his sense of humor. When his condition finally compelled his entrance to a nursing care center, Don became a favorite among the staff for lightening the atmosphere with his daily joking (though he could be a handful at times as well !). Don is survived by one daughter, Dolly Summers-Geiser; four grandchildren, Ashleigh Chilcote, Laura Summers, Nick Summers and Jacob Summers; and two great-grandchildren, Rylee and Jackson Chilcote. He is also survived by his three brothers, Philip Geiser, Kenneth Geiser and Gary Geiser; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held Thusrday, May 18, 2017, from 6-8 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Ave., Columbus, OH 43212. There will be no funeral service. A graveside ceremony at Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Avenue in Columbus will be held Friday, May 19, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. All who wish to attend are welcome. In lieu of flowers, due to Don's love of cats, please instead make donations to Cat Welfare Association, 741 Wetmore Rd., Columbus, OH 43214 in his memory. Don was a true character and will be missed by many.
