Obituary

John Anthony Convertine, age 96, passed away November 23, 2016, after a brief illness. He was Born in Columbus, OH, December 14, 1919. John valued his family, friends and fellow man and believed all people should be treated with respect and kindness. He was a member of Riviera Country Club and served his country in World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He loved all sports, but especially enjoyed golf, which he played into his nineties. John also loved playing bridge with his friends at the Gillie, Whetsone and Blendon Senior Centers and his Monday group at Donatos. Amazingly, he played daily until just before his death. Former proprietor and long-time owner of Ledo's Lounge, just north of the OSU campus, John prided himself on maintaining a positive and safe environment for his patrons. Whether playing golf, bridge, or tending his bar, he most enjoyed interacting with his friends and patrons. John is survived by Virginia (Teatino), his wife of 65 years; sons, Mark and Michael; daughter, Michelle (Patrick) Connor; grandchildren, John, Andrew, Benjamin and Claire Connor; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Vito and Carmella Convertini; brothers, Ernest and Eugene; sisters, Mary Rose and Rosemary Pelecki. Visitation is Sunday, November 27, 2016, from 2-6 p.m., at the JOHN QUINT TREBONI FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus. To the Convertine family,
Several years ago, my brother Pat drove to our house in Sandusky, and together we went to Columbus, our home town, to visit places and people that were important as we grew up there. One of our first stops was Minerva Lake Golf Course, and shortly after we entered, we mentioned to the manager that our Dad had played there regularly on Saturday for years. A gentleman overheard that, and the manager introduced us to your Dad, and said he was also known as "Johnny Conversation." We quickly discovered why. He said he remembered our Dad, and we were initially skeptical. He spoke longer, and revealed details that indicated that he clearly did. We spent the better part of an hour there, sharing stories over coffee. Pat and I have talked about that day often, and shared the story with many others. I just learned of your loss when I was visiting again in the Columbus area, and saw the notice in the Dispatch. I quickly notified my brother, and he replied to me that it was truly a special day. We will certainly never forget it. Again-we are sorry for your loss, but will remember a long life well lived. Sincerely, Dr. Jay O'Neill

Sorry to hear of your father's passing, he was always good to me whenever I visited the house by Northern Lights and when I worked at Ledo's on Thursday and Friday nights while in college. Wish I could be there to help celebrate his long and full life. Give my best to your Mom. Hope to see you both on my next visit to Columbus. Our prayers and love are with you.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your father. Met John at Ledo's in 1964' Always had a great time there. Always made everyone feel at home. He put the white towel over the shoulder and say at the end of the night, "Let's play Johnny goes home". Won't forget the great times there with friends.
